Marrying older wives is often considered weird in Nigeria. Many times, men who walk down the aisle with women that are older than them court the criticisms or snide remarks from family and friends, and even strangers. Celebrities are not different. Their case is even worse as they are often in the eye of the public.

Many Nigerians believe any man who marries an older woman is a simp. They think such a man will not have any respect in his home. But, this is a misconception. It takes maturity, discipline and emotional intelligence to defy societal standards to marry an older woman and be happy with her.

7. Soul E and Queen Ure

Some may not remember Soul E, but he was one of the budding stars to watch out for in the early 2000s. His song, Soul E Baba, was a hit and he also featured in 2Face Idibia’s 2006 hit song, E be like Say. 

Soul E married Queen Ure and it was reported that she was 11 years older than him. When asked why they got married despite the huge age gap, the couple replied that “love conquers all” and that age was not a problem. However, their marriage ended in a messy divorce a short time later and Soul E retreated from public life.

A report on Punch noted that he has since remarried and has now become a pastor in Abuja.

6. Joseph Ameh and Kaffy

A Guinness Book of Records holder, Kafayat Shefau, popularly known as Kaffy, was married to drummer Joseph Ameh in 2012 and the union produced two children. Kaffy is eight years older than Joseph.

Unfortunately, news of the couple’s rumoured split hit social media in 2021. Kaffy eventually confirmed the rumours when she released a statement on her Instagram page.

5. Darey Art Alade and Deola Ayeni

Darey Art Alade and his wife, Deola Ayeni, have been married for over 10 years and are still going strong. Their marriage has been blessed with two children. The interesting part is that Darey is eight years younger than his wife.

When asked about the age difference in an interview, the singer replied that he was very happy with the age difference and perfectly happy being married to his wife. Recall that Darey is the son of renowned Nigerian entertainer, Art Alade.

4. Stan Nze and Blessing Jessica Obasi

Stan Nze and Blessing Jessica Obasi are Nollywood actors. Blessing is 10 years older than Stan but the couple are so into each other that you will not notice. The Prophetess actress was working in the oil and gas sector before she left to pursue her passion for acting.

Today, she owns her own production company called D’Esperanza Media. Blessing is 44 years old while Stan is 34. The Nollywood stars tied the knot in 2021 and are still going strong at the time of this article.

3. Mike Edwards and Perri Shakes-Drayton

Mike Edwards is a Big Brother Naija Season 4, “Pepper Dem” star. Before he was in BBNaija, The professional athlete represented Nigeria in the Commonwealth of Nations Game, where he finished sixth in the long jump event.

Edward is married to British Olympian, Perri Shakes Drayton. Drayton is a former athlete and Olympic Games winner, representing the United Kingdom. She will be 35 on December 2023 while Edwards will be 33 in July 2023. This means there is a two-year gap between the couple.

Recall that Edwards remains the only married person to come close to winning BBNaija after coming second behind winner, Mercy Eke, in season 4. He was highly praised for refusing to have an affair during his time in the house. Meanwhile, the couple have a child together.

2. MC Fish and Anita Joseph

MC Fish and Anita Joseph are a controversial couple in the Nigerian entertainment industry. The obvious age difference is only a part of their controversy. The couple are known to display public affection for each other. However, they do not care for public criticism because they are so in love with each other, based on their public photos.

Anita Joseph is a Nollywood actress while MC Fish, whose real name is Fisayo Michael Olagunju, is a popular Nigerian comedian, event host, hype man, socialite and master of ceremony. The Nollywood actress is nine years older than the comedian.

The couple is happy together at the time of writing this piece, despite the harsh criticisms they receive for their public displays of love. They also do not have a child together, though Anita has a daughter from a previous relationship.

If there is a couple that has stood the test of time, despite all the challenges hurled at them, it is Peter Okoye and Lola Omotayo. Peter Okoye is part of the famous singing duo, P-Square. He stirred public emotion after he announced his marriage to his longtime sweetheart, Lola. This is because Omotayo is nearly 10 years older than the Ifunanya crooner. Not only that, there was the issue of tribalism as Okoye is Igbo, while his lover is Yoruba.

Perhaps, the issue of tribalism was more felt by Okoye’s family, who allegedly rejected Omotayo. However, Okoye, who is also known as Mr. P, went ahead to marry his sweetheart against all odds. The marriage reportedly scattered the Okoye family, including his relationship with his twin brother, Paul, also known as Rude Boy, and this resulted in their separation for five years.

The good news is that Peter Okoye and Lola Omotayo are still together as they share three children. The twins are also back together doing music. So, all is well that ends well.

Conclusion

Marrying an older woman does not mean that the man will be emasculated. Contrary to what traditionalists believe, men who marry older wives can live very fulfilling lives. It takes two to tango and only mature people can make their marriage work.

Therefore, age is just a number.
