Idaho National Guard welcomes Major General Donnellan as the new Adjutant General
BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — The Idaho National Guards change of command ceremony signifies a transfer of authority through symbolic and customary military traditions.
Governor Brad Little has appointed Major General Timothy Donnellan as Idaho’s 26th Adjutant General following the retirement of Major General Michael Garshak, who has been Idaho’s Adjutant General since November of 2017.
Governor Little, Major General Garshak, and Major General Donnellan spoke during the ceremony before the traditional passing of the flag took place.
The passing of the flag was described to the audience as a visible and tangible symbol of each unit and the commander's authority over it.
Master of Ceremonies, Captain Brook McRoberts, explained the significance of each passing. She said, “At this time Command Chief Master Sergeant Nathaniel Durfee, charged by tradition with safeguarding, care, and display of the colors during peace and war, will pass the state of Idaho flag to Major General Garshak, the outgoing adjutant general.”
The flag was passed on to Governor Little, Major General Donnellan, and finally back to Command Chief Master Sergeant Durfee.
Major General Donnellan said, "It is my promise to the Governor and the citizens of Idaho, and the National Guard will continue to be ready for any challenges overseas or at home."
To honor the new Adjutant General of Idaho, the ceremony ended with playing the Army and Air Force songs as the Idaho Air National Guard performed an A-10 flyover.
